Bulgaria Small Mammal Research

In October 2025 BiOME Director Richard Moores teamed up with leading Bulgarian mammalogist, Nedko Nedyalkov, to undertake some small mammal trapping at a number of research sites across Bulgaria.

In the far southwest of the country we were fortunate to capture a number of Western Rock Mouse Apodemus epimelasand Balkan Short-tailed Mouse Mus macedonicus, whilst the northeast produced Bicoloured White-toothed Shrew Crocidura leucodon, Common Vole Microtus arvalis and numerous Wood Mice Apodemus sylvaticus. A night up a snowy mountain failed to produce the hoped-for Snow Vole Chionomys nivalis but did produce large numbers of Bank Vole Clethrionomys glareolus and Wood Mice. An excellent few days!
