Martyn Owen, MCIEEM, Partner
Martyn, based in Shropshire, is an ecologist, ornithologist and environmental scientist with over 20 years’ professional experience.
During this time Martyn has developed a broad ecological knowledge base with particular expertise in avian ecology, survey design, implementation, data analysis and assessment. He has extensive experience in the energy sector in the UK and further afield, having managed or undertaken ecological/ornithological surveys and assessments in relation to more than 80 renewable energy projects as well as proposed coal-fired, CCGT, overhead lines and other related developments.
Martyn is an experienced, licenced (NE, NRW and SNH) and well-respected ornithologist, implementing the knowledge he has gained during a lifelong passion for birds in a variety of voluntary roles (County Recorder, Annual Report editor and Conservation Committee member). He has completed and managed numerous professional surveys throughout Europe and further afield, including wader surveys for the RSPB in Ukraine, flora and fauna monitoring work in Italy and Russia and large carnivore monitoring in Estonia.
Martyn has worked on projects in all parts of the UK and is familiar with all relevant ornithological and ecological survey techniques. He is an experienced/ licenced bat and GCN worker, having managed and completed survey work in relation to many projects. He is also a qualified and experienced tree climber.

Richard Moores, MCIEEM, Partner
Richard has been a practicing ecologist for 26 years. He possesses a wide-skill base and consultancy involvement across a range of disciplines. He has extensive experience of Ecological Impact Assessment, project management (in excess of 700 projects) and planning, site supervision and protected species surveys. Richard has planned and implemented numerous development-related mitigation projects involving European Protected Species and been involved in various Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects throughout the UK.
He is an experienced and expert ornithologist and has completed innumerable bird surveys for a diverse range of projects and clients throughout Britain and further afield. Richard is also an expert mammologist and bat surveyor and he currently holds UK-wide bat survey licences for handling, disturbance and use of mist-nets, harp-traps and acoustic lures. Richard has obtained, as Named Ecologist, 150 bat mitigation licences and is a Registered Consultant under the Natural England Bat Mitigation Class Licence scheme.Richard is also the Norfolk Mammal/Bat Recorder.

Laura Owen, Operations Director
Laura has over 17 years of varied experience. During this time she has developed a broad knowledge of business management with particular expertise in HR, marketing and finance. Prior to joining BiOME in 2018, Laura was responsible for the marketing and product development of three large brands in the baby industry.
Laura brings a wealth of experience in delivering customer value and improving business performance as well as keeping all policies and procedures up to date. -
James Grundy, MCIEEM, Principal Ecologist / Ornithologist
James is an ecologist who specialises in ornithology, based in Sussex. He has over 20 years of experience, gained through long term voluntary work and nine years as an ecological consultant. He has worked for small, medium and large consultancies, gaining a wide skill base and experience on projects of all sizes.
James has led the ornithology work on a number of complex projects throughout the UK, including HS2 Phase 2b and other nationally significant infrastructure projects. His experience includes coastal defence, pipeline, nuclear, road, rail and 20+ wind farm schemes, as well as numerous smaller projects – including conservation-focused work. James’ work has included pre-and post-construction monitoring and assessment and has often involved dealing with impacts on sensitive bird species and designated sites.
He has also been involved in more innovative ornithology work on a number of projects, such as radio-tracking and novel analyses using sound recording and environmental data.
James has held licences for a variety of Schedule 1 breeding birds and holds current Natural England survey licences for Barn Owl and Great Crested Newt. -
David Bratt, Ecologist/Ornithologist
David is an experienced ornithologist and licenced bird ringer with expertise in lepidoptera and other invertebrate study. He has accumulated over 15 years of experience conducting ornithological, including long term volunteering and work in the conservation sector along with consultancy.
David has experience working with sensitive species and across a variety of designations implementing monitoring and management. David is also keen photographer and a passionate naturalist and has contributed to projects internationally in Transylvania and Cyprus in recent years; he is based in our Norfolk office. -
Ollie King, Ecologist/Ornithologist
Ollie is an ornithologist based in Norfolk, who joined BiOME in September 2023. Through his previous role as assistant warden at Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory, he gained experience implementing and delivering a range of ornithological surveys. He also has experience monitoring migratory invertebrate species and assisting with botanical surveys, alongside implementing conservation management strategies.
Ollie is involved in the delivery of ecological services for a wide range of projects, primarily in relation to renewable infrastructure developments. He frequently conducts Vantage Point, Breeding Bird and Wintering Bird surveys as well species-specific survey work. He has also undertaken consultancy work in relation to small-scale developments including the delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and the completion of Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and associated reporting.
Outside of work, he is a trainee ringer close to obtaining his C permit, and has been a life-long passionate naturalist.

Joshua Fusiara, Ornithologist
Josh joined BiOME in March 2025 as a ornithologist.
Through his previous work as a reserve warden and an assistant ornithologist in consultancy, he has gained an understanding of the ecological requirements of an array of avian species, as well as implementing and delivering a range of ornithological surveys including Schedule 1 breeding bird species.
He is an experienced surveyor having completed the full range of surveys in relation to a wide variety of development types previously, including wind farms, nuclear sites, overhead lines and residential developments in England and Wales
Josh is a trainee bird ringer close to obtaining his ‘C’ permit and is passionate about woodland birds.

Olivia Barnes, Graduate Ecologist
Olivia, an Environmental Sciences masters graduate from University of East Anglia with a year abroad in Australia, joined BiOME at the beginning of September 2023 as a graduate ecologist based in our Norfolk office.
Prior to joining BiOME, Olivia volunteered as a Conservation Researcher in eSwatini. She is passionate about ecology and conservation.
Olivia is involved in delivering ecological services across a wide range of projects and sectors. She conducts surveys for small-scale developments, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Preliminary Roost Assessments. Additionally, Olivia has completed the Certificate of Bat Acoustics Analysis.
Outside of work, Olivia enjoys yoga, watercolour painting, the outdoors and travelling.

Ralf Butchers, Graduate Ecologist/Ornithologist
Ralf joined BiOME in October of 2024 as a Graduate Ecologist/Ornithologist, based in Swindon.
He Graduated Aberystwyth University in 2021 with a BSc degree in Zoology, he then went on to complete a MRes in Parasite Control focusing on ectoparasites of Welsh Ospreys and other raptor species. Ralf’s past experience includes working as an ornithological surveyor in north Wales and a wider ecological consultant in London. Ralf has knowledge in both UK flora and fauna, ecological surveys and GIS work.
Outside of work Ralf enjoys playing and watching a range of sports especially Arsenal.

Victoria Smith, Graduate Ecologist/Ornithologist
Victoria joined BiOME in 2025 having completed a BSc in Wildlife Conservation at Nottingham Trent University as a mature student, graduating with a first-class honours degree. She has volunteered for the RSPB at Frampton Marsh and Lincolnshire Bat Group conducting emergence bat surveys and bat box checks.
Prior to joining BiOME, Victoria worked as an ecologist for two years, undertaking bat and wintering bird surveys as well as completing certificates in UK Herpetology and Fungi with the Field Studies Council and a certificate for Aspiring Ecologists.
When not working Victoria is passionate about herpetology, owning two Leopard Geckos called Izzy and Lilo. She also enjoys going fungi hunting.

Adam Staggs, Graduate Ecologist
Adam Staggs joined the BiOME team in 2025, having obtained a MSci in Environmental Science from University of East Anglia.
He has volunteered in eSwatini (South Africa) where he worked on a local game reserve aiding in various mammal, reptile, bird and invertebrate surveys. In addition he assisted on an ongoing research project in Scott Creek Conservation Park with Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia looking into the behavioural ecology of Superb Fairy-Wrens Malurus cyaneus.
Away from his desk at BiOME Adam enjoys rock climbing, hiking, cooking and surfing.
