Shropshire Ecological Surveys
2016 proved to be a good year for our team of Shropshire based ecologists.
BiOME completed in excess of 20 bat surveys in Shropshire to inform planning applications, with surveys of many structures undertaken, from abandoned train tunnels to proposed barn conversions and house redevelopments. Our specialist team of tree climbing bat surveyors in Shropshire also assisted developers with the monitoring of bat boxes erected as part of mitigation schemes and the assessment of potential roost features in trees for evidence of bats. During these surveys numerous bats were encountered, with the most noteworthy observation being the discovery of a previously unknown colony of Lesser Horseshoe Bats. This record considerably expanded the known range of this species in Shropshire.
Extended Phase 1 Habitat surveys in Shropshire were completed at a variety of locations and in relation to a number of development types. We were particularly pleased to be able to offer our support to assist a local cricket club achieve planning permission for a new ground. To inform this planning application Badger surveys, Otter surveys, breeding bird surveys and a Barn Owl survey were completed, with subsequent ecological impact assessment. This new ground will offer children in the local community an opportunity to enjoy cricket in a rural setting.
Great Crested Newt surveys were completed in the north and south of the county, with newts encountered at a number of sites.
