Introducing Myles Tomlinson, Graduate Ornithologist

Myles Tomlinson joined BiOME on April 2025 as a Graduate Ornithologist. Myles grew up in Nantwich and after completing a BSc Zoology degree at The University of Sheffield (achieving Upper Second Class Honours) he undertook a graduate work placement with Natural England at Fenn’s, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses NNR in Shropshire, Britain’s third-largest lowland raised bog. During his time there, Myles carried out a range of tasks, including species monitoring, habitat management, and public engagement. He also conducted two independent monitoring projects aimed at establishing the breeding distribution of Eurasian Hobby and Raven at the site.

Myles has a strong interest in the ecology of ground-nesting birds, particularly waders, and the environmental pressures they face, such as predation, habitat loss, and disturbance. This is reflected in his participation in numerous bird surveys and conservation efforts, including upland and lowland breeding wader surveys, habitat assessments, and predator monitoring projects. Myles is particularly interested in investigating the decline of wader populations in ecologically significant landscapes. He has further honed his bird monitoring skills through bird ringing and nest recording, with participation in wader and raptor nest finding and monitoring, along with passage and wintering wader catches on The Wash and in North Wales.

Outside of work, Myles regularly participates in bird ringing sessions with the Shropshire Ringing Group, enjoys walking and birdwatching and is a supporter of Stoke City Football Club.
