BiOME Welcomes Alex Beath
BiOME is delighted to welcome Alex Beath, who joined our ornithology team in March 2025.
Alex graduated in July 2023 with a first class MSci in environmental science from the University of Nottingham, specialising in avian ecology. He is especially interested in the interactions between silviculture/agriculture and wild bird populations; his MSc thesis focused on determining differences in bird community assemblages in coniferous forestry plantations in Kings Forest, in East Anglia. Alex worked for the BTO as a field surveyor throughout his studies, conducting surveys in both Northern Ireland and Wales. After finishing his MSci in 2023, he travelled to Ontario, Canada, to volunteer at Thunder Cape Bird Observatory, where he helped band and monitor migration trends for three months through the autumn.
Following his MSc Alex was accepted onto a PhD programme in Saskatchewan, Canada. During his time on the project, he analysed data obtained from neck-attached GPS-accelerometer devices on Greater White-fronted Geese, and was able to travel extensively through North America, gaining experience in rocket netting, Bayesian analyses, and project management.
Alex loves the outdoors and spend a lot of time in Scotland hiking and camping. He played rugby all his life but after a string of injuries had to give it up, although still watches and supports England whenever they play though. Alex is also a football fan, supporting Norwich City and owns a dachshund called Boris who keeps him company when working from home.
Welcome to the team Alex!
