Safe Working in Water Training
Professional development is key to helping our team deliver high-quality and varied ecological services. In January several of our graduate ecologists and ornithologists completed a Safe Working in Water course to ensure we are well equipped for our water-based surveys in dynamic field conditions.

The course was a Rescue 3 Europe certified course delivered by Adventure Consultancy. The two-day course took place in Shropshire with a mix of field and classroom-based learning. In the classroom, our team enhanced their expertise on a water health and safety looking into hydrology, water hazards and personal flotation devices. In the field, our team got hands on experience learning wading techniques, using a throw bag and self-rescue techniques.
Many surveys completed by BiOME require working in and around rivers, ponds, lakes and other waterbodies. This training ensures our teams ability to identify risks, avoiding hazards and respond appropriately to incidents whilst working in water.
Our team will be able to apply their knowledge from the course to upcoming Water Vole, Otter, Great Crested Newt and habitat surveys as well as any of our other surveys that occur where water safety needs to be considered.
